MULTIMEDIA

You can find hotels in Egypt for all kinds of budgets and travel styles. The top star hotels all come with the amenities you expect from the major chains.

Some travelers like to experience the "romantic feel" of old imperial days and book some time in the Winter Palace in Luxor, the Old Cataract Hotel in Aswan or the fabulous Mena House in Cairo where you wake up to the sight of the mighty Pyramids and rest in Victorian style.

Mid range hotels are fairly decent, but you better be informed as to plumbing, air conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter, food quality, etc. Some travelers are more tolerant than others and your decision will depend on how much time you'll spend visiting the tourist attractions vs. actually staying at a hotel facility.

Adventure type travelers, namely the so called backpackers can settle for cheap facilities in Dahab, Luxor and Hurghada. Another option is to stay at family owned pensions.

There are two interesting ways to save on hotel charges during your Egypt trip. One is to travel by train at night from Cairo to Luxor by train. These are equipped with sleeping facilities and you can "rest" during the 8-9 hour ride. Michael Palin from Monty Python Flying Circus did just that for his "Pole to Pole" TV series.

The other way of not paying for a night at a city hotel is to book a Nile cruise, which is really a floating hotel.
