The Ancient Egyptian scribe, or sesh, was a person educated in the arts of writing (using both hieroglyphics and hieratic scripts, and from the second half of the first millennium BC also the demotic script) and dena (arithmetics). He belonged socially to what we would refer to as a middle class elite, and was employed in the bureaucratic administration of the pharaonic state, of its army, and of the temples. Sons of scribes were brought up in the same scribal tradition, sent to school and, upon entering the civil service, inherited their fathers’ positions.

Much of what is known about ancient Egypt is due to the activities of its scribes. Monumental buildings were erected under their supervision, administrative and economic activities were documented by them, and tales from the mouths of Egypt’s lower classes or from foreign lands survive thanks to scribes putting them in writing.

The scribal profession had companion professions, the painters and artisans who decorated tombs, buildings, furniture, statuary, and other relics with pictures and hieroglyphic text.

Dr Vasko (or Vassil) Dobrev explains his search for the tomb of Userkare – a Sixth Dynasty Pharaoh who ruled between the reign of Teti and Pepi I. In the video, Dr Dobrev explains that Egypt was in a power limbo after the assassination of Teti, until Userkare came to bring peace and restore order. He is excavating a site at Saqqara South where his team have so far covered a fifth of a hectare, out of a 15 hectare plateau.

This 2009 Stuart L. Wheeler Gallery Lecture was given by Egyptologist Robert Brier, one of the world’s foremost experts on mummies. As Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Philosophy at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University, Brier has conducted pioneering research in mummification practices and has investigated some of the world’s most famous mummies, including King Tut, Vladimir Lenin, Ramses the Great, Eva Peron (Evita) and the Medici family of Renaissance Italy.

Affectionately known as “Mr. Mummy,” Brier is the first person in 2,000 years to mummify a human cadaver using the exact techniques of the ancient Egyptians and will share his expertise on mummy preservation gained through experimental study.

One of the most popular stories around the discovery of King Tutankhamun is that of the Curse of King Tut., made popular after the death of the discovery’s funder Lord Carnarvon just 6 weeks after the tomb was opened. Fuelled by a mistranslation of the Anubis statue which threatened death on all those who entered the tomb, a media frenzy took over, even though the vast majority of the team, including explorer Howard Carter, went on to live long lives. Dr Zahi Hawass recounts these tales and tells us that he had never believed in such a curse upon the Tomb of King Tutankhamen.

Dr Zahi Hawass talks about the tomb robbers and how the Tomb of King Tutankhamun was saved from being raided after it was sealed by the Valley of the Kings police. Work on creating the Tomb of Ramesses VI, which is adjacent to KV62, led to part of King Tut’s tomb caving in and sealing the entrance. It makes KV62 the only tomb in the Valley of the Kings to be discovered fully intact.
